Queensland’s smoke alarm rules are the toughest in Australia, and the final deadline is close. Here is what applies to you in Gladstone, in plain terms.
The short version
Every Queensland home must have photoelectric smoke alarms, interconnected so they all go off together, in every bedroom, in every hallway that connects bedrooms to the rest of the house, and on every level.
- Rentals: required now, at the start of every new lease.
- Homes being sold: required now, before settlement.
- Every other home: required from 1 January 2027.
What “compliant” actually means
Photoelectric. Not ionisation. Photoelectric alarms sense visible smoke and respond faster to the smouldering fires that kill people in their sleep. They also false-alarm less when you cook.
Interconnected. When one alarm detects smoke, every alarm in the house sounds. Wired interconnection or wireless, both are allowed.
Where they go. Each bedroom. Each hallway serving bedrooms. Any storey without bedrooms gets one on the most likely path of travel to exit.
Power. If the existing alarm was hardwired 240V, the replacement must be hardwired. Where there is no wiring, a 10 year sealed lithium battery alarm is allowed.
Age. Alarms are replaced every 10 years. The manufacture date is on the back.
Hardwired or wireless?
Hardwired alarms with battery backup are the gold standard and are mandatory where an alarm was already hardwired. Wireless-interconnected 10 year lithium alarms avoid opening ceilings and are a good fit for older Gladstone homes with no existing alarm wiring. Both must be photoelectric and interconnected.
Hearing impaired occupants

Landlords: your checklist
- Alarms tested and working within 30 days before a new tenancy.
- Compliance confirmed in the tenancy agreement.
- Tenants told to test monthly and to report faults.
- Alarms replaced before their 10 year date.
